Basic Techniques – Think you know how to ring that bell? Making a sound at the correct time is only part of it. Come learn the ergonomic way to ring to avoid hurting yourself while making music. We’ll also be exploring numerous other techniques such as mart lifts, swings, and even gyros! This class will be offered both sessions.
Handbell Maintenance – Need to fix a spring? Want to know what to do when a handle feels loose? Come learn how to do basic maintenance and repairs of Schulmerich and Malmark handbells. This class will be offered in just the morning session.
Intro to Bell Trees – You’ve seen all those bells hanging from a stand and wondered if you could do that. You can! This class will go over the basics of how to string together bells and how to learn a solo on the bell tree. This class will be offered in just the morning session.
Stopped Sounds – There are so many techniques that we can use on bells to play staccato: martellato, pluck, thumb damp, hand damp, and mallets. But do you know how to use these techniques correctly to get the best sound and to avoid damaging the bell? This class will be offered in just the morning session.
Am I the Melody? – You’re looking at the music and there are a lot of black notes, but your director is telling the group to bring out the melody. Is it you? Learn some of the tricks to detecting the melody and how that should effect your ringing. This class will be offered in just the afternoon session.
Ringing Multiple Bells – Ever see people playing two bells in each hand and wonder how they do that? We’ll explore Shelly and 4-in-hand ringing and the pros and cons of each. If time allows, we may even show how to do 6-in-hand. This class will be offered in just the afternoon session.
Weaving/Handbell Changes – You’re doing great until you have to change bells quickly (we’ve all been there). There are tricks to making those changes effectively while still being musical. This class will introduce weaving and getting away from having a right bell and a left bell. This class will be offered in just the afternoon session.
